The acting head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Cameron Hamilton, was let go one day after he told Congress he did not think it was in the public's interest to defund the agency. The Trump administration by contrast plans to eliminate the agency and turn its functions over to the states.
In a letter, California Senator Adam Schiff urged DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to reinstate $33 million in FEMA earthquake retrofit funding. The grants were meant to retrofit a particular type of residential building known as a "soft story" apartment building, which are prone to collapse. In April FEMA announced the cancellation of the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program, calling it "wasteful and ineffective" and "more concerned with political agendas than helping Americans."
With hurricane season just a few weeks away, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has canceled its strategic plan, Wired reports. In a memo, agency leaders said the existing plan was scotched because it no longer aligned with administration goals, and a new plan would be unveiled later this summer. FEMA employees told Wired they couldn't recall a time when a strategic plan was canceled without a new one in place.
The order directs the Federal Emergency Management Agency Review Council to continue its operations until March 25, 2026. The functions of the President under the Federal Advisory Committee Act that apply to this Council will be performed by the Secretary of Homeland Security, following established regulations, guidelines, and procedures.
The order directs federal agencies to continue the Federal Emergency Management Agency Review Council until 10 days after the Council’s report is submitted or until May 29, 2026, whichever comes first. The Secretary of Homeland Security is assigned to perform the President’s functions under the Federal Advisory Committee Act for this Council, and the order supersedes prior sections while preserving existing agency and OMB authorities and subject to available appropriations.
